Civic Exam in France

Starting January 1, 2026, a mandatory 45-minute, 40-question computer-based civic exam (Examen civique) is required for foreigners in France applying for first-time multi-year residence permits, 10-year resident cards, or naturalization. Candidates must score 80% (32/40 correct) to pass, covering French values, institutions, rights, duties, and culture.

The test, which lasts a maximum of 45 minutes and is completed digitally, consists of a multiple choice questionnaire with 40 questions, divided into 28 general knowledge questions and 12 scenario based questions. Each question has four possible answers, only one of which is correct. To pass the exam, you must obtain at least 32 correct answers, corresponding to a success rate of 80 percent.
